Barcelona FC is Qatar's most valuble brand. The club's sporting success, along with its social and economic dimensions make it the top image for the Persian Gulf country. Qatar is showing concern over the sponsorship contract renewal, however.  The virulence of some candidates in the latest presidential elections has irritated the Qatari authorities, who agreed to the conditions stated by the new contract with ex-economic vice president, Javier Faus.

Economist, José María Gay de Liébana, in an announcement made to Cadena Ser, stated that the Qatari authorities "had felt badly treated in the last electoral campaign, with candidates promising that their priority was to make sure that Qatar Airways appeared on the team's shirts". The club's training ground was also very present in the complaints made.

Bartomeu and Arroyo in Doha

The Qatari authorities entered the debate sparked on the Quatar airway's sponsorship nervously, far weaker following Josep Maria Bartomeu's absolute majority victory. Two weeks ago, the Barça president and Manel Arroyo, vice-president of marketing and communication, travelled to Doha in order to outline the renewal of the agreement with the Qatari airline.

Barça is, for the Qatari authorities, the perfect ally for the country's image, aware that it must strengthen its economic and entrepreneurial structures. For this reason, Qatar is offering 60 million euros per year in order to prolong the partnership that began in 2011 for an additional four or five years. The sponsorship agreement had had a large international impact.
